Schengen Visa from Pakistan: The Complete Guide

A Schengen visa lets you travel across the whole Schengen area on a single authorisation. That simplicity hides a set of procedural rules that Pakistani applicants get wrong constantly — and getting them wrong is fatal to an application regardless of how strong the rest of the file is.

Which embassy do you apply to?

This is the rule that catches most applicants:

• Apply to your main destination — the country where you will spend the most days.
• If the stay is split equally between two or more countries, apply to the country you will enter first.
• For a single-country trip, apply to that country.

Applicants sometimes apply to whichever embassy has the earliest appointment, intending to travel elsewhere. This is visa shopping, it is detectable from your bookings, and it is grounds for refusal.

Travel insurance: non-negotiable

Schengen rules require travel medical insurance that:

• is valid throughout the entire Schengen area
• covers the full period of the intended stay
• covers emergency medical treatment, hospitalisation and repatriation
• meets the minimum coverage level required

A policy that expires before the requested visa validity ends, or that does not cover the whole area, is a routine refusal reason and an entirely avoidable one. We arrange compliant policies and issue the certificate in the format missions expect.

Document checklist

• Completed and signed application form
• Passport valid for at least three months beyond your intended departure from the area, with at least two blank pages
• Two recent photographs to the specified biometric standard
• Schengen-compliant travel medical insurance certificate
• Confirmed return flight reservation
• Confirmed accommodation for every night of the stay
• A day-by-day itinerary consistent with the bookings
• Bank statements for the required preceding period
• Employment letter with approved leave, or business registration and tax documents
• Cover letter explaining the purpose of travel and the main destination
• Proof of ties to Pakistan

Financial requirements

Each member state sets an indicative daily amount considered sufficient for subsistence. The practical test is whether your funds cover the trip you have described, proportionate to the destination. A budget that supports a week in Prague will not read as credible for the same period in Zurich.

As with all visa applications, the pattern of your bank statements matters more than the closing balance. Consistent activity over months is stronger than a lump sum deposited before applying.

Itinerary coherence

Everything in the file must tell the same story. If your itinerary says five nights in Italy and two in France, your hotel bookings must show that, your flights must match, and you must be applying to Italy. Applications where the narrative and the documents diverge are refused not because of any single defect but because the inconsistency undermines the whole submission.

Appointments and biometrics

Applications are submitted through outsourced centres — VFS Global and TLScontact operate most of them in Pakistan, with locations in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. You attend in person to submit documents and give biometrics, which remain valid for a defined period afterwards.

Common reasons for refusal

• Applying to the wrong member state
• Insurance that does not meet the criteria or expires too early
• Accommodation not covering the full stay
• Insufficient or unexplained funds
• Itinerary inconsistent with the bookings
• Weak evidence of ties to Pakistan
• Doubt about the purpose and conditions of the intended stay

How long can you stay?

Short-stay visas generally permit up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across the whole area. Your visa sticker states the actual validity, the number of entries and the permitted duration — which may be less than the maximum. Read it carefully on issue, and count your days: overstaying has consequences for every future application.
