UK Visit Visa from Pakistan: A Complete Application Guide

What the entry clearance officer is actually assessing, and how to build a file that answers it.

The UK visit visa is the application Pakistani travellers ask us about most, and the one refused most often. The refusal rate is not a reflection of Pakistani applicants being unwelcome — it reflects how many applications are submitted without addressing what the decision maker is actually assessing.

What the decision maker is assessing

An entry clearance officer will never meet you. They decide on the balance of probabilities, from a written file, on three questions:

  1. Is the visit genuine? Is there a real, coherent reason for this trip at this time?
  2. Can it be funded? Can you or your sponsor demonstrably pay for it, from money whose source is clear?
  3. Will you leave? Do your circumstances in Pakistan give you sufficient reason to return?

Nearly every refusal traces back to one of these three being left unanswered. Everything below is about answering them in advance.

Core documents

  • Current passport, plus previous passports showing travel history
  • CNIC, and a NADRA family registration certificate where a relationship needs proving
  • Bank statements covering the preceding months, with any large credits explained
  • Salary slips and an employment letter stating position, salary, tenure and approved leave
  • For business owners: registration documents, tax returns and business bank statements
  • Property documents and other asset evidence
  • Travel itinerary and accommodation details
  • A cover letter setting out the purpose of the visit

If a relative in the UK is sponsoring you

Your sponsor's file matters as much as yours. It should include:

  • Their passport and proof of immigration status
  • An invitation letter explaining the relationship, the purpose and duration of the visit, and exactly what they are paying for
  • Their employment letter, payslips and bank statements
  • Accommodation evidence — tenancy agreement, mortgage statement or property deed
  • Evidence of the relationship: family registration documents, photographs over time, communication records

A vague invitation letter with no supporting documentation behind it adds almost nothing to an application.

Financial evidence: where most applications fail

There is no published minimum balance. What matters is whether the funds are credible, sufficient and explained.

The single most common mistake

A large deposit appearing in the account shortly before the application, with no explanation of where it came from. This pattern is recognised immediately and does more harm than a smaller balance would have done. If a genuine large credit exists — a property sale, a gift, a business receipt — document it with evidence rather than leaving it unexplained.

A modest balance with six months of consistent activity is stronger than a large sum that appeared last month. Your income should also reconcile with your tax filings; an applicant declaring a high salary with no corresponding tax record invites scrutiny.

Demonstrating ties to Pakistan

Ties are the answer to "will you leave?". Evidence them concretely:

  • Employment — a letter confirming your role, your tenure and that leave has been approved with a return date
  • Business — registration, tax records and evidence of ongoing operations
  • Property — ownership documents
  • Family — dependants remaining in Pakistan
  • Financial commitments — ongoing obligations that require your presence

The application process

  1. Complete the online application and pay the fee.
  2. Book a biometrics appointment at a VFS Global centre in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi or Mirpur. We can handle the appointment booking.
  3. Upload or submit your documents in the required format and order.
  4. Attend the appointment to give fingerprints and a photograph.
  5. Wait for the decision. Processing times vary; check current guidance rather than assuming.

The most common reasons for refusal

  • Unexplained deposits or insufficient funds
  • Weak or undocumented ties to Pakistan
  • Inconsistencies between the application, the documents and the stated purpose
  • A sponsor whose documentation does not support their stated undertaking
  • Previous immigration history that has not been addressed
  • Documents that appear altered — which results in a long-term ban, not just a refusal

If you have been refused

Read the refusal notice carefully: it states the grounds. A fresh application must address those grounds specifically with new evidence. Resubmitting substantially the same file rarely works, because the caseworker can see the previous decision and the reasoning behind it.

Important

Never submit a document you have not verified. Fabricated or altered documents result in a refusal under the deception provisions and a re-entry ban lasting years. No shortcut is worth that outcome.

How we help

We review your circumstances, issue a checklist specific to your case, examine the documents before submission, complete the online application, book the appointment and brief you on the submission day. We do not influence the decision — nobody can, and anyone claiming otherwise should be avoided. What we do is make sure the file answers the questions being asked.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is no published minimum. The assessment is whether funds are sufficient for the trip described and whether their source is explained. A modest, consistent balance beats a large recent deposit.

Yes. Declare the previous refusal and address the specific grounds given in the notice with new evidence. Submitting the same file again rarely succeeds.

Processing times vary by season and service level. Check the current published guidance and apply with a comfortable margin before your travel date.

It is not a mandatory requirement for a standard visitor visa in the way it is for Schengen, but it is strongly recommended. See our travel insurance page.
