Madinah is more forgiving than Makkah. The Central Zone surrounds Masjid an-Nabawi on all sides, the ground is level, the walkways are wide and shaded, and most hotels in the zone are a short and genuinely pleasant walk from a gate.
That said, one decision still matters: which side you stay on.
The Central Zone (Markaziyah)
The Markaziyah is the ring of hotels immediately surrounding the Masjid complex. Most properties within it are between 100 and 500 metres from a gate. Compared with Makkah, where 500 metres can mean a hill and an underpass, 500 metres in Madinah is a flat, shaded five-minute walk.
North side
Closest to the women's entrances and to the routes used for Rawdah access. If women in your group intend to visit the Riyadul Jannah — and most do — staying on the northern side saves a substantial walk around the complex each time. For families, this is usually the right choice.
South and east sides
Nearer to Bab as-Salam and to Jannat al-Baqi. Equally convenient for prayer and often better value than the northern side. A good choice for men travelling alone or groups not prioritising Rawdah access.
Outer ring
Roughly 400 to 700 metres out, still within the zone. Noticeably cheaper with a walk that remains comfortable. This is where most executive-tier packages place you, and the trade-off is a good one.
Outside the Markaziyah
Considerably cheaper, with shuttle service to the Masjid. Reasonable for longer stays where you are not attending every prayer at the Masjid, and the basis of most economy packages.
Rawdah access
Visiting the Riyadul Jannah requires a permit issued as a time slot through the official Nusuk platform, with separate allocations for men and women. Slots are released in advance and taken quickly, especially in Ramadan.

What to check before booking
- Which side of the Masjid the hotel sits on
- Walking distance to the nearest gate, not to the complex boundary
- Proximity to the women's entrances if relevant to your group
- Room occupancy and family room availability
- Meal plan and whether buffet timings work around prayer
- Distance to Jannat al-Baqi for ziyarat
How many nights in Madinah?
Five is the minimum most pilgrims find satisfying. It allows the Rawdah visit, several prayers in the Masjid, and the ziyarat sites without compressing everything into one exhausting day. The most consistent regret we hear from returning pilgrims is not having spent longer in Madinah — it is worth weighting your itinerary accordingly.
